New reports are now coming in showing that the chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh, will be meeting with Tony Woodley, the Unite joint leader. Apparently this meeting is suppose to come before the proposed strike that will be taking place on Saturday.

This meeting will be the first direct contact between the two leaders. British Airways has been in negotiations with the Unite union through the auspices of the Trade Union Council. However, Mr Walsh has now decided to meet directly with Unite in his last effort to avoid the strike.

The news of this meeting comes just after the Unite union announced its attempt to make the strike a national headline. The union, which currently represents about 12,000 cabin crew at the airline, will call workers out on strike for three days on March 20th. Another strike has already been planned as well for March 27th. However, the second strike action will be a four day strike.

The choice to strike has been extremely unpopular in Great Britain. However, the movement seems to be gaining support elsewhere around the world. In the United States, Teamsters, which is the largest workers union in the country, has offered its support. The leader of Teamsters, James Hoffa, even suggested that flights in the United States could be disrupted as well. He said whatever they have to do, they will do it. However, very strict labor laws in the United States could call into question any action the union might take.

Recently British Airways has been coming up with a contingency plan in case the strike does go through. The airline noted that, right now, they should be able to fly about 65 percent of their flights despite the strike.

The Unite union, which is the union that will be taking industrial action against British Airways this weekend, is now expected to meet with representatives from its American counterpart Teamsters. This news comes as the union attempts to take this dispute with British Airways to an international level.

The first planned strike by British Airways cabin crew will be taking place this coming Saturday. The staff is expected to hold the strike for three days. A second strike has already been confirmed for March 27th; however, this one will last for four days.

Teamsters, which is the largest transport union in the United States, has acknowledged the meeting was due to take place, it still remains very unclear what role the company will play in the industrial action. The International Brotherhood of Teamsters, which represents 1.4 million workers in the United States and Canada, said it would stand in solidarity with Unite.

The Teamsters group is an active member of the International Transport Workers Federation. Teamsters went on to say that the International Transport Workers affiliates around the world are mobilizing to support British Airways workers in their fight for passenger safety and worker respect.

The International Transport Workers Federation is a global union federation of transport worker’ trade unions. Just last year the International Transport Workers Federation had 654 member organization on its side in 148 countries. These groups represent about 4.5 million workers.

Prime Minister Gordon Brown has already said that he supports transport secretary Lord Adonis and his view that the strike action is totally unjustified. British Airways did confirm that it would operate up to 60 percent of its planned departures during the strike. This does include all of the flights from London City Airport.

One of the most well known low budget hotel chains in the UK, Premier Inn, has just recently unveiled early plans for a new 120 bedroom hotel in High Wycombe. The hotel will be built on the land that is opposite to the Dovecot multistory car park in the Archway road. It is also said that this new hotel could create up to 50 local jobs.

A public exhibition on this proposed hotel will be held at Hamilton Primary School next week. This will give the public a chance to voice their feelings on the proposed hotel. As of right now the plans for the hotel do include a restaurant and a bar.

After hearing what the general public has to say about the hotel, the bosses of Premier Inn will decide on whether to submit the plans for the hotel to the Wycombe District Council. Unless the public expresses a deep hatred for the hotel, it is very likely that this is one idea that will get approved. The news of this new hotel does come pretty close to the news from Travelodge, announcing their plans to move into the area as well.

Richard Pearson from Premier Inn said that they are very delighted to announce the proposal for the hotel. This is a plan that will help to regenerate the area and provide a lot of local jobs. Overall, this new hotel will bring some much needed hotel accommodations to the area and boost local tourism.

Due to the fact that this hotel will bring in more local jobs it is very unlikely that the public will reject it. This proposal could bring some much needed income to the area as a whole.

According to the national carrier of the Czech Republic, Czech Airlines, flights will resume between Manchester and Prague. These flights will also be offering connections to Russia and the Ukraine. The regional manager for the UK, Ireland, Netherlands and Belgium at Czech Airlines, Roman Orlik, said that the schedule has been set up to find the most convenient connections to destinations beyond Prague.

Czech Airlines, which is a government owned carrier, served this route until the winter of 2009. It was during this time that the route was stopped due to economic reasons. However, Czech Airlines has now decided to bring it back, because Manchester is very important to small and medium enterprises. Orlik went on to say that the relaunch of the route comes at a time when the balance books are improving for the airline overall. The UK economy is back on track, so passengers are starting to fly again.

Even without the Manchester route the airline’s results are better than last year. Just last year the airline saw a huge decline in terms of passengers from UK regions to Prague. Orlik thinks that they have reached the bottom, and they can now wait on their numbers to slowly start growing again.

Right now, however, Czech Airlines is under investigation by the European Commission over a CZK 2.5 billion loan from the Czech government-owned bank Osinek. The European Commission ruled that the loan was a form of illegal state aid. On this matter, Orlik said by the end of April they should have a decision over whether the loan was appropriate or not. It is important for the airline what the decision will be, as it will have impact on the balance sheets and cash flow of the company.

Once again, maybe in an attempt to look like the good guy, the Unite union has urged British Airways to return to the negotiating table. The overall aim of this would be to avoid the strike action that is scheduled for the end of this week.

Just last week the Unite union, which represents about 12,000 cabin crew at the British flag carrier, announced it would begin industrial action later on this month. Staff are expect to walk out for three days on March 20rd. After this, the staff will strike for another four days starting March 27th.

On BBC Radio 4 early yesterday morning, the Unite Joint general secretary, Tony Woodly, said what they need to do is put the offer on the table. Let’s get 100 percent of these flights flying and get serious negotiations off the ground again. This is an offer that he wanted to make publicly.

Just following the strike announcement, British Airways withdrew a formal offer to unions. However, Mr Woodly said it had not been made clear that British Airway’s offer would be withdrawn if the union followed through with the strike. Mr Woodly finished up by saying that, if British Airways put the offer back on the table that they had last week, then they could postpone the dispute and get into real serious talks to solve the problem.

British Airways, after announcing contingency plans yesterday, said that they still are available to hold further talks with the union in order to advert the strikes. British Airways also confirmed that it will still be able to get about 60 percent of its flights off the ground despite the strike threat from the cabin crew.

According to British Airways, 60 percent of its customers will still be able to keep their travel plans over the planned strike by cabin crews. Industrial action is set to start with a three day walkout on March 20th. After that it will be followed up by a four day walkout on March 27th.

The carrier has announced a contingency plan to enable around 45,000 passengers to fly each day during the first strike period. The airline has also been able to come up with an agreement with 40 other carriers to allow their customers to rebook their flights free of charge in the event that their flight is canceled.

British Airways said that it would be updating its list of people who are due to travel during the second strike period after the first one has ended. Between March 20-22, 60 percent of long haul flights to and from Heathrow will operate as planned. 30 percent of short haul flights to and from the airport are to function as well. Out of Gatwick, a full schedule of long haul service will be in place. More than half of the short haul trips will go ahead as well. The flights to and from London City will be unaffected by the strikes, as will as services that are run by franchise partners.

Willie Walsh, the chief executive of British Airways said that they are deeply sorry to all customers who have been effected by this strike. The passengers are innocent victims in this cabin crew attack on the airline. Despite the desire of the Unite union to ground the airline, the flag will continue to fly high.

Apparently Swiss International Air Lines has just recently made an operating profit of CHF146 million in 2009, or £90.7 million. Although the airline did post a profit, it was still CHF326million below what the airline made in 2008.

The Swiss airline carried 13.8 million passengers in 2009. This is an increase on the 13.5 million that flew with the airline in the previous year. The Swiss International Air Lines manager, Gregor Koncilja, said that they are very pleased to count themselves as one of the few airlines that was able to post a profit for all of 2009. This achievement allows Swiss International to continue to invest in their products and services.

Swiss International Air Lines launched a six times daily flight from Heathrow to Geneva in January. It plans to increase the capacity on its Manchester to Zurich route starting in April. Overall, all of these routes have started to pick up pretty well for the carrier.

Mr Koncilja said that he thought it was the right moment for the airline to add these new routes. He did warn, however, that Heathrow was unlikely to see much expansion this year. Instead, Swiss International Air Lines will concentrate on its regional airports, Manchester and Birmingham. The traffic out of the London region has slightly declined because of the financial and banking sector. Thus, they would rather move capacity into the other regions. This is where they saw substantial growth over all of 2009. They expect that this will be something that continues into 2010 and beyond.

Mr Koncilja finished up by saying that increasing capacity in these areas is the overall goal. As soon as the demand is there, they can enforce it through other areas as well.

It now appears that British Airways has officially been given the strike dates by the cabin crew. Apparently the cabin crew, which is being represented by the Unite union, is preparing to strike later on this month. This could spell bad news for both British Airways and many travelers as well.

Following months of failed negotiations, British Airways cabin crew have finally confirmed their walkout dates. The members of the Unite union will walk out for three days starting March 20th and then again for four days starting March 27th. The union had originally ruled out a strike over the Easter holiday season.

Of course, the bad news does not stop there for British Airways or its travelers. In fact, the union went on to warn that there could be further action on April 14th if a resolution is not agreed on before then. The union is banking on the fact that British Airways will be ready to take a different stand on their situation after the strike.

The union chose to take industrial action following a ballot in late February in which 81 percent of British Airways’ cabin crew voted in favor of the strike. However, another ballot will be taking place on the new offer from British Airways.

If this new proposal is accepted by the cabin crew members, then it could put an end to the strike this month. However, it’s important for travelers to not get their hopes up about this due to the fact that it’s unlikely that the cabin crew will accept this new deal. In fact, the union is not recommending that the staff accept it.

Apparently, Emirates Airlines has announced that it will be hiring up to 2,000 new crew members during the course of 2010. This is all due to the fact that this Arab Emirates flag carrier is looking to continue its expansion plans.

The carrier went on to pretty much update the airline industry about its progress at ITB Berline. The airline confirmed that it had increased the number of aircraft in its fleet to 145 over the past year. The airline also went on to say that it added Durban and Luanda to its list of destinations.

Emirates Airlines will begin to offer departures to Amsterdam, Madrid, Dakar, Prague and Tokyo throughout 2010. The president of Emirates Airlines, Tim Clark, said that they are currently looking forward to supporting ITB again this year, and they are pleased to be able to report so many new developments. He finished up by saying that these continue to be testing times for the airline industry. However, the airline’s expansion plans seem to be weathering the storm fairly well.

Just following these big developments, the airline has already hired some 660 new cabin crew. They have went as far as to hire 60 more pilots since March 2009. Another 2,000 cabin crew are expected to be hired this year alone.

Overall, the company’s portfolio has expanded as well. Back in October, Emirates announced its much awaited conservation-based project. This was the Wolgan Valley Resort and Spa near Sydney. Ever since then, it has become the first hotel in the world to achieve carbon neutral certification under the internationally recognized scheme.
