It now seems that the founder of easyJet, Sir Stelios Haji Ioannou, has accepted an undisclosed amount of libel damages over advertisements by Ryanair. Apparently these ads accused Stelios of lying. In fact, Ryanair had run ads that depicted Stelios as Pinocchio, which suggested that he was lying about easyJet’s punctuality.

Sir Stelios brought proceedings in London’s High Court over the ads, which appeared in many newspapers, as well as on Ryanair’s website in January and February. The adverts concerned the flight on-time statistics of easyJet. These are the same statistics that have not been published on the airline’s website in 37 weeks.

Recently these two airlines have been knocking heads over ads in an effort to steal the market away from each other. Ryanair also went on to apologize to Sir Stelios for including his photo and referring to him personally in four other ads. The airline, which does create its ads in house, has issued its apology in newspapers recently. This apology is coupled with a smiling picture of Stelios himself.

The apology said that Michael O’Leary and Ryanair unreservedly apologize to Sir Stelios for including his photo in an advert that ran on January 20th and the 29th of this year. This ad featured a photo of Sir Stelios and referred to him as easyJet’s Mr Late Again. It also called on Stelios to stop hiding the truth about easyJet’s flight delays and resume publishing its weekly details on its on-time performance.

The apology goes on to say that Mr O’Leary and Ryanair will not publish the ad ever again. It also states that they have agreed to pay Stelios for the damages and legal costs in settlements of his libel claim.

The founder of easyJet, Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou, has just recently called an emergency meeting for the shareholders of the company this week. This is all in a bid to stop the budget airline’s expansion plans, which Sir Stelios does not agree with.

This emergency meeting comes as easyJet’s new chief executive has hinted at the fact that a third party will be called in to review the company’s business model. Of course, the pace of growth is going to be they key area of investigation.

Sir Stelios has been battling with the board over these expansion plans for the past two years. He is particularly keen to limit the company’s fleet to the current 189 planes for the next four years. This is something that Stelios wants to do even if that means renegotiating a contract with Airbus. Also, Sir Stelios, is keen for the company to start paying dividends.

For people that do not know, Sir Stelios’s family controls a whopping 38 percent of easyJet shares. He just recently resigned from the board of directors in May, following the departure of chairman Sir Colin Chandler and finance director Jeff Carr.

The former Guardian Media Group chief executive, Carolyn McCall, took over at the airline last week. McCall is believed to want a review of the 7.5 percent growth target, which was approved by the board of directors in June of 2009. She is also expected to argue that the fragility of the UK’s recovery makes the target unrealistic. A lot of this is due to expected public spending cuts and the high price of oil.

It now seems that Iran Air has been added to the European Union’s operating restriction list. The airline already has been making headlines this week following reports from European airports that were refusing to refuel Iran Air aircraft.

The European Union was quick to deny recent UN sanctions were behind the motivation. The transport commission spokesperson said that they deal purely with safety requirements. Their controls focus entirely on safety and nothing else.

Under these new terms of the latest European Union advice, Iran Air’s fleet of Airbus A-320s and Boeing 727s are banned from operations in European airspace. In total, 23 of the airlines 62 aircraft are now prohibited from operations in the European Union.

Siim Kallas, who is the European Union vice president said that they cannot afford to compromise Europe’s air safety. He went on to say that, where they have evidence that an air carrier is not performing safe operations or where regulators fail in their obligations to enforce safety standards, they will act to guarantee safe skies for their citizens.

With this, which is the fourteenth update to the list, the carrier Blue Wing Airlines from Surinam has been included on the list of airlines that are totally banned from operations in European airspace. This decision has been made due to a series of accidents that have been suffered by the airline and serious deficiencies revealed during inspections.

Of course, the commission did see the improvements in oversight exercised by the competent authorities of Indonesia. It is not yet known just how many airlines will be placed on this blacklist before the updates stop.

It now seems that Defending Champion Roger Federer of Switzerland has lost 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 to Tomas Berdych of the Czech Republic in the quarter-finals at Wimbeldon. This is a loss that a lot of people did not seem coming.

Berdych, who was actually leading 2-1 going into the fourth set, wobbled only slightly in the sixth game when he produced successive double faults. However, he was able to redeem himself with his big first serve to save four break points.

Tomas held serve to go to 5-3 in front. Federer did manage to save one match point, he could do very little to prevent Berdych from hitting him with a trademark forehand. In case it was not apparent already, Berdych was the Czech Republic number one seed.

Thus, Berdych becomes the first Czech to reach the last four of the men’s singles since Ivan Lendle back in 1990. Jan Kodes, back in 1973, is he only Czech player in the open era to have won the Wimbledon men’s title. Now Berdych has a chance to repeat history.

However, before that can happen, Berdych still has some things standing in his way. This includes his semi-finals match up with third seed Novak Djokovic. He has beaten Berdych in both of their previous meetings. Berdych did defeat Britain’s Andy Murray in three sets at the French Open earlier this year, though.

Overall, this Wimbledon is shaping up to be one of the most exciting ones that have ever been witnessed. Not only have their been great match ups, but one match was able to break tons of records and become the longest tennis game ever played.

It now seems that the UK Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, went on to defend his emergency budget just recently. He said that it was tough but fair and necessary to avoid a sovereign debt crisis, as seen in Greece. This emergency budget will help the UK secure economic growth by encouraging business investment.

Osborne also said that he is confident that they will see the private sector recovery that they need in this country. If people were to hit a problem, that problem would almost certainly be a sovereign debt crisis of the kind that’s affecting much of Europe. That is the thing that requires people to show the world that they can pay down their debt, and he thinks that they can resolve the issue.

The treasury chief also said that, far from resulting in sharp job cuts, the new budget measures would actually mean higher employment due to private sector investment. Any reduction in the public sector head count would be achieved by not filling vacant position rather than cutting staff.

Osborne did not stop there, he said that what he wants is people to believe in the future of the country. He wants people to believe and invest in the country and set up their own businesses. The big problem facing the economy, which is the debt crisis, is now under control. The country has a plan to deal with this, and he believes in the future of the country.

The chancellor’s emergency budget on Tuesday shows the government’s spending cuts. Overall, it amounted to 25 percent of all department budgets, excluding the health department and international aid commitments. It also covered GBP 11 billion in welfare cuts.

According to the Air France boss, air travel cannot be sold as a commodity. It cannot be sold as something that is the same no matter who produces it. Henri Hourcade, the general manager of Air France in the UK, was speaking about this at a session on the treatment of air travel as a commodity at the Business Travel Market.

Hourcade went on to cite a number of reasons as to why Air France’s product could not be treated as the same as others. He said that there are a lot of differences. He named things like flat beds in premium classes, the airline’s decision to concentrate on a regional network and an all inclusive approach to service.

He even went on to defend Air France’s decisions to sell flights on Ebay. This had led to claims that the airline was selling its flights as a commodity. However, he said that the flights were for the new A380 service to New York, and it was purely a promotional exercise.

Sabre’s VP of marketing, Kley Moor, said that shopping for travel has become very difficult. He said with bundling and unbundling, it has become unclear at the point of the sale what is included and what is not. It needs to be better managed.

Just this week, Sabre announced its new Sarbre Red reservation system. The company hopes that it will give agents more information on airline charges. This will given them a better understanding in which they are able to pass on to their consumers. This should help make buying air travel easier during a time when the travel industry needs a little help.

According to new reports, Thomas Cook Airlines is set to remove all of its existing in flight entertainment systems and replace them in certain planes. In fact, the company will be taking out these in flight systems and replacing them with Playstation Portable systems. However, this in flight entertainment comes at a extra charge of £7.50.

The goal is to offer these Playstation Portable systems on all short- and medium-haul flights. Passengers on these flights will be given the chance to hire these devices. The gaming systems themselves will come preloaded with eight feature films and a selection of television programs and video games.

The Thomas Cook chief executive officer, Mr Derbyshire, claimed that just one out of every 10 passengers actually watches the airline’s in flight entertainment. Thus, it stands to reason that Thomas Cook Airlines would look to replace this system with something else that passengers may enjoy.

Thomas Cook’s decision to replace their in flight systems and replace them with these hand held video game systems is not a brand new idea. In fact, this is an idea that other airlines are using as well. easyJet and the United States-based Frontier Airlines have also chosen to introduce the Playstation Portable on their flights.

However, this idea also continues a very recent trend that people are starting to notice in the airline industry. This is the trend to keep ticket prices low and make that money back up with extra charges. In fact, according to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, United States carriers’ extra charges have increased by at least 42 percent since 2008. This makes those “extra charges” a very lucrative business.

Emirates, the well known carrier that is based out of Dubai, has now ordered 32 more Airbus A380 superjumbo jets. This will give the carrier an order list that is 90 planes long. This makes Emirates the world’s largest A380 customer.

Just recently, reports show that Emirates now accounts for some 40 percent of the worldwide orders for Airbus and its A380. Right now Emirates’ order is valued at about $11.5 billion at list price. However, it is also suspected that Emirates got a very big discount for buying in bulk.

Airbus CEO Tom Enders said that this is the single largest A380 order ever placed. He calls the order a sign of confidence in the A380 and of course Airbus as a whole.

Right now, Airbus has delivered 10 A380’s to Emirates, The carrier flies the jets on several different routes, depending on the length of the flight. Either way the jet typically holds about 525 passengers.

However, even with the prospect of having 90 of these superjumbo jets in its fleet by the end of 2017, Emirates is also considering adding A380’s that have an even larger seating capacity. The President of Emirates, Tim Clark, said that the airline would be interested in buying a stretched version of the A380 that can seat about 1,000 people. This is a model that Airbus is now considering building sometime in the near future.

Experts have went ahead and put a perspective on this carrier’s new big order. They point out that, in 1985 the company had just 2 planes. Now it has grown to rival the likes of Singapore Airlines and Qantas.

Apparently the travel industry feels that there is a lack of government support for the industry. This became a very big problem during the ash crisis. A survey of members by the Institute of Travel and Meetings revealed that 72 percent of buyers thought that the UK government could have done more to assist the travel industry during that time of crisis.

They went on to say that, in particular, the government could have called for better planning and clearer communication. Buyers also reported that suppliers across the board hiked up their prices during the ash crisis. This went double for hotels.

The CEO of the Institute of Travel and Meetings, Paul Tilstone, said in general, the reaction to the crisis was measured and effective – a result of crisis management systems having been finely tuned over the years. However, the support of stakeholders outside the industry appeared to be woefully lacking. The research also focused on how well travel managers coped during the ash crisis and the level of support they received.

The survey also revealed that one third of travel managers did not have crisis plans in place by the time the ash cloud became major news on April 15th. The MD of Argate, or the Institute of Travel and Meeting’s research partner, Colin Goldney, said that clearly the TMC community provided some great support for business travelers and their companies. However, there is also an opportunity for them to look at more creative solutions, which companies had to create themselves. TMC is in the perfect position to be able to coordinate activity between companies and look at chartered services and other resolutions in times of crisis.
