For a while now, there have been a number of reports that suggest that China is not going to take part in the European Union’s emissions scheme. However, it now seems that these reports have been confirmed. In fact, on Monday, China made it very clear that it will not allow its airlines to take part in the Emissions Trading Scheme. Mostly, this is because China feels that this scheme violates international rules.

Unfortunately, for the European Union, this news comes just before a summit. During this summit, the European Union was hoping to get some money from China to ease its own debt. However, with how upset China is over the emissions scheme, it is very unlikely that China is going to help.

For people who do not know, this European Union Emissions Trading Scheme has been the topic of much controversy for a while now. In fact, the scheme will see all airlines that fly in or out of European airspace charged for the carbon emissions that they emit. Countries all over the world have been opposed to this scheme. China, the United States and India have been the most vocal about it.

Chinese and European Union leaders will soon find themselves at a summit in Beijing. During this meeting, the European Union is hoping to dip its hands into China’s huge foreign exchange reserves to pay off its own debt. However, this new emissions scheme could prove to be a big “elephant” in the room. Only time will tell if China lets this scheme affect its choice to help the European Union or not.

Over at American Airlines, most employees are really worried about the state of their pensions. Of course, it is hard to blame them with the parent of American Airlines, AMR Corp, filing for bankruptcy last November.

According to reports from American Airlines, more than 90 percent of their workers with vested pensions would not see any kind of reduced benefits, even if the airline terminated its pension planes. Despite this claim, many workers are only taking it at face value.

Jeff Brundage, who is the senior vice president of human resources, sent a letter to employees of the airline group on Monday. His goal here was to attempt to end workers’ fears about the future of their pensions.

Mr. Brundage said, for the employees out there worried about their pensions, don’t be. Even if the pension plans are terminated, more than 90 percent of participants would see no reduction in their pension benefits accrued as of the November 29, 2011 Chapter 11 filing date if payments begin at normal retirement age.

Despite this news, the company did not disclose just what it plans to do with its pension program. After all, it has yet to be brought up in bankruptcy court filings. What people do know is that American Airlines only paid about $6.5 million in a pension contribution recently. Reports show that the company was scheduled to pay some $100 million. When viewed in this light, it is very easy to see why so many employees are worried about the state of their pensions.

It now appears that a number of big hotel chains are looking forward to increasing their portfolio by 2015. Some of the most notable chains that have announced plans to add-on to their number of hotels includes Starwood Hotels and Marriott International.

Groups like Marriott and Starwood are very keen on the idea of tapping into what India has to offer. This just so happens to be a country that has one of the fastest-growing economies. Thus, it would be great for some airlines to be able to get into this area while it is on the up and up.

Reports show that Starwood Hotels said it plans on opening at least 20 new hotels in India by 2015. They want to open the hotels here because they believe that tourism in India is just going to continue to grow. Not only that, but a number of people are now taking business trips to this area.

For Starwood, they are going to focus on expanding their luxury and mid-market segment, in 2012. This will include expanding its Luxury Collection, Westin, and Aloft brands. Not only that, but the group also hopes to introduce its super luxury hotel Brand W and St Regis in the country in 2015 and 2016.

Even Best Western International wants to get in on the action. In fact, this group said that it plans on opening at least 66 additional hotels in India over the next five years. This would actually increase the number of hotels that Best Western offers in this area to 100.

Apparently, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has ordered bus operator Double Happyness Travel to immediately cease services for intrastate and interstate passengers. This group, which is part of the United States Department of Transportation, declared the operator an imminent hazard to the safety of the public.

For those that do not know, Double Happyness Travel offers bus services between places like New York City, Wilmington, Baltimore, and Albany. The safety regulator had investigated the operations of the company and found several violations. This did include controlled substance and alcohol testing, vehicle maintenance, hours of service, and driver qualification requirements.

Ray LaHood, who is the Transportation Secretary, said that safety is their top priority. They will continue to be vigilant in their efforts to protect the traveling public from companies that do not follow the rules.

Anne S. Ferro, who is the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration administrator, said that they will continue to do all they can under legal authority to remove unsafe buses like Double Happyness Travel from the roads. It is the regulator’s duty to do so.

This safety group has doubled the amount of comprehensive safety reviews and bus inspections that it does. The group wants to be sure that it takes unsafe operators off the road. So far, they have increased roadside motor coach inspections nearly 100 percent. In fact, reports show that they increased their inspections from 12,991 in 2005 to 25,705 last year. On top of this, compliance reviews have jumped almost 128 percent from 457 to 1,042.

A trans UK train operator has announced that it will cut out its early morning off-peak travel hours. CrossCountry Trains says it will now begin its off-peak reduced fare travel period at 09:30 instead of the 05:00 it has customarily used.

Routes affected are on lines running from Scotland to southwest England. The move amounts to a de facto fare increase for passengers wishing to commence their journeys before 09:30. The off-peak cost of a return ticket between Edinburgh and Penzance is currently £207.

Passengers leaving early will now have to pay £427 for the same ticket. CrossCountry says that despite the fact off-peak travel hours have been cut back, customers can buy two one-way tickets between the two cities for £197, if they book in advance.

Passenger Focus, the UK’s official rail watchdog, said train companies have gradually stripped back off-peak travel hours in recent years, while transport worker’s union chief Bob Crow accused train operators of making vast profits out of the fare-paying public.

The action by CrossCountry is more bad news for train travellers who were today hit by above inflation-rate fare increases. Commuters buying season tickets on some busy routes in the UK have seen the cost of them rise from between five and eight per cent.

CrossCountry Trains is owned by Arriva, whose parent company is German national rail operator Deutsche Bahn. Arriva currently runs around one out of every train services in the UK as well as servicing numerous bus routes.

Reports now show that, on Monday, an Arriva Trains Wales service collided into a lorry that was carrying two trailers of hay. Apparently, this happened near Whitland. Overall, this resulted in seven people being injured. At the time of the event, there were 60 passengers on the Milford Haven to Manchester train. It is believed that the train was traveling about 50 miles per hour.

Thankfully, paramedics were able to treat the seven passengers at the scene of the accident. They were also able to give several others oxygen. One of the injures was a head wound. Five of the hurt people did have to go to the hospital. However, the good news was that no one was seriously injured. All the people who were not hurt were led to safety after the crash.

Paul James, who was one of the people who had gotten hurt on the train, said that he had only been on there for about 15 minutes. He was just getting in some reading when there was a big crash. His injuries consisted of a sprained thumb and a gash on his head from the seat in front of him.

There was a woman who was sitting in front of Paul, who had damaged teeth and some blood coming out of her nose. Overall, experts say that the passengers were very lucky because it could have been a lot worse. Although no one wants to get injured while traveling on a train, it is better than losing a life.

Recently, Alec Baldwin has been in the news for his comments about American Airlines. Now, however, he finds himself in the news for taking a stab at Greyhound as well. However, his comment was not really a hit on Greyhound but on flight attendants.

Alec Baldwin recently wrote in a blog saying that flight attendants make flying on planes a ‘Greyhound bus experience’. It is pretty apparent that his comment was made to put down the American Airlines’ crew. However, in the process, he also upset Greyhound.

Dave Leach, who is the president and chief executive of Greyhound, said in an open letter to the media that he was disheartened to hear the comments made by Mr. Alec Baldwin. The president said that he would be the first to admit that the group had some challenges with the perception of their brand, but they have made many changes in recent years to substantially enhance the overall travel experience. He guesses that the actor has never traveled with the company, but asks that he give the company a try for several reasons. However, one of those reasons would be to show him that traveling by bus is really a great way to travel.

He finished up this letter by saying that if Mr. Baldwin does not choose to ride with Greyhound, all he asks for is a simple apology. They are not the same company as they have been in previous years. They are better and offer a modern and affordable travel alternative to people.

Reports now show that a young 4-year-old girl was killed in a five-car crash on the M6. Police say that they arrested a man at the scene of the accident. The crash happened around 12:30am on the southbound motorway between junctions 4a and 4. This puts the crash close to Brimingham.

The Highways Agency, fire engines, seven ambulances, and police arrived at the scene. They were there for about six and a half hours. A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said that they arrived to find several cars and a lorry that had collided. A child in one of the vehicles suffered multiple serious injuries. She was given CPR by fire service members at the scene. Resuscitation efforts were taken over by the BASIC Doctor and the ambulance crews at the scene. The young girl was also put on advanced life support. The crew continued to work on her en route to the hospital. Despite all efforts, the girl unfortunately died shortly after getting to the hospital.

A spokesman for the ambulance service went on to say that another girl, in the same vehicle, had multiple injuries. She was believed to be eight years old. She was given emergency treatment at the scene. The woman in the car had head injuries after the crash. Both people were transferred to University Hospital Coventry. A male in the same car was checked at the scene and found not to have suffered any injuries at all. He chose to go to the hospital with the woman.

Apparently, the London Underground could be looking at some strikes on Boxing Day. This news comes in as thousands of drivers are set to be balloted for a strike or not. Overall, this is a move that is part of a dispute over how much money the staff should be paid for working the day after Christmas.

Keep in mind, this would not be the first time that Tube drivers held industrial action over the holidays. In fact, just last year they went on strike while seeking triple pay and a day in lieu for working on this bank holiday.

It is believed that some 2,200 Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers, and Firemen members are due to vote on this issue in the next few weeks. Currently, it is understood that the union is pursuing quadruple pay this year for drivers. It seems like every year they just want to continue increasing how much they feel drivers should get for working on this day.

A spokesman for the union said that their executives were told that talks with the London Underground failed to reach a deal on the terms of Boxing Day. Now the union has informed the firm that it will hold a ballot for industrial action among the employees it represents. Overall, the group just wants adequate compensation for drivers forced to work on this day. The results of the ballot are due to be announced on December 14. The union will have to inform the company seven days before it intends to hold any strike.

Some assumed that Hertz would just keep throwing bids at Dollar Thrifty until one of them was approved. Maybe even Dollar Thrifty assumed this. However, as it would turn out, that is not the case, In fact, Hertz has now chosen to pull its $1.94 billion bid for Dollar Thrifty. This news comes nearly 18 months after the second largest car hire firm in the United States announced that it was making an offer for its rival.

So now the question is, why did Hertz pull its bid? According to the car hire firm, it cited market conditions as being the main reason why it has pulled the bid. However, they also made note of Dollar Thrifty’s share-buyback program as well.

During the past 18 months, Hertz has increased its bid for Dollar Thrifty a number of times. Some assumed that if Dollar Thrifty kept holding out, then they would soon get the bid that they wanted. In fact, Dollar Thrifty actually openly rejected two of the bids. The first rejection-came in September of last year. It was followed by yet another rejection in October of this year.

However, not all hope is loss. Hertz did note that they would still be pursuing approval from the United States Federal Trade Commission despite pulling the offer. If the company does win antitrust approval, it will review its offer for Dollar Thrifty. The company does believe that a merger with the smaller rival is still possible. The pulling of this offer, however, may help Dollar Thrifty see that the “kindness” of Hertz does have its limits.
