Apparently British holidaymakers are currently wasting money if they choose to buy euros at British airports rather than on the high street. These travelers can waste as much as £16 per transaction, new studies claim. Due to the economic downturn, this is a price that some people cannot afford to pay right now.

This research goes on to indicate that these UK travelers are losing about £28 million a year due to poorer exchange rates and commission charges that are applied at airports. Thus, the research warns that 1.2 million tourists traveling to the euro zone this summer are being left out of pocket despite sterling reaching a 20-month high against the euro.

This study, which was actually done by the Post Office, analyzed exchanged rates and commission charges that applied to a £286 transaction. The reason why this number was chosen as the number to do the research on is because that is the same amount of money that the average British holidaymaker purchases.

The head of travel money at the Post Office, Sarah Munro, said that they compared rates to five UK airports with those available at the Post Office branches. They found that tourists buying at the airport would get far fewer euros for their pounds. She went on to say that, in fact, families changing £286 into euros at the airport face losing about £16. That is enough to buy a round of drinks and eight ice creams in Portugal.

Right now the pound has rallied by almost 10 percent against the euro ever since it sunk to a 2010 low in March. It is now worth four percent more than a year ago.

Reports now show that, despite cuts in the UK, the £1 billion plan to electrify 200 miles of railway line in Scotland remains on track. This is some of the first good news that travelers have heard in a very long time.

While addressing concerns about the plans to electrify the Central Belt track by 2016, Transport Scotland said that they remain committed to working with their industry partners to deliver the significant program of electrifying the railway. This work will help cut journey times between Edinburgh and Glasgow by 35 minutes.

This project, which has been officially called the Edinburgh Glasgow Improvement Program has been questioned following a Network Rail decision to suspend a £1.1 billion program of investments. Network Rail has actually planned to electrify the track between London and Wales and between Liverpool and Manchester. However, the scheme has been shelved for now.

The body, which operates railway across the UK, said that the decision to shelve the program came following a Department of Transport move to cancel an order for 700 new train carriages. Despite all of this, Transport Scotland confirmed that they are still on schedule.

In fact, a spokesman for Transport Scotland said that this rail network in central Scotland will improve journey times. It will increase reliability and provide travelers with more opportunities to make the switch from private car to rail.

Approximately one-third of the UK’s rail network is presently electrified. This is by far a much smaller proportion than other European countries. Thus, in this regard the UK is falling behind other European Union counties.

It now appears that David Beckham is pinning his British sporting hopes on Andy Murray and a win at Wimbledon. This news comes after David watched England’s hopes of winning the World Cup get crushed by Germany.

David Beckham, the former England captain, sent Andy Murray a text message just recently to congratulate him on his resounding victory against Sam Querrey on Monday. This British sports star won his third successive quarter final place after defeating the American 18th seed in straight sets. The tennis star said that he was delighted to have received the message from Beckham.

Murray went on to say on Twitter, thanks for all the good luck and well done messages today. Always nice to get one from David Beckham.

One source close to the tennis star added that David’s always been very supportive of Andy, watching his games whenever he can. They have met several times in the past and keep in contact. Andy was delighted to hear from him this week.

Just last week, Murray named Beckham as the most famous person he had ever met. This message came the day after Beckham watched in despair from the dressing room in Bloemfontein and England received an ignominious 4 -1 beat down from Germany.

Murray will now be facing Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who is the French 10th seed. However, a Wimbledon spokesman said that there are a lot more clouds around compared to recent days. They have also seen their first outbreaks of rain of the championships so far. There is a 20 percent risk of showers on Wednesday, but the main emphasis is on a lot of fine weather during the day with some bright or sunny spells.

The Canadian firm will take a 65 percent share in the company. The Peel Group controls key assets, including Liverpool John Lennon Airport, Robin Hood Airport, Durhma Tees Valley Airport and Doncaster Sheffield Airport.

John Whittaker, the Peel Group chairman, said that they are just delighted to move forward and partner with Vancouver Airport Services. Its network of international airports and expertise as a leading airport specialist will further increase the success of these regional airport businesses.

Under the terms of this new deal, Peel Group will retain a 35 percent investment in PAL and a presence on the board, and they look forward to the opportunities that this strategic partnership will make.

Although some British travelers were hoping that these latest talks between British Airways and the Unite union would end in agreement, reports now say that it did not. Now the airline is facing even further strikes by its cabin crew after failing to reach yet another agreement.

The conciliation service Acas said that they are, regrettably, unable to break the deadlock and move closer to a deal between British Airways and the Unite union. This, of course, paves the way for yet another strike ballot. If the cabin crew members vote in favor of industrial action, then a new wave of walkouts could take place in the first week of August. Unfortunately for travelers, this is dealing peak school summer holidays.

The company said that, at the present, there are no more plans to hold more meetings. However, they will stay in contact with both sides and are ready for more talks when they are. A spokesman for the union said that the they remain committed to finding a settlement which addresses its members’ concerns. They said that they would remain in touch with Acas and British Airways until they reach that end.

British Airways also admitted that they were ready for more talks. The industrial action has cost the carrier some £150 million. It recently said that passenger numbers were 14.2 percent lower in May than a year earlier.

Cabin crew have, so far, voted high in favor of strike action. During the last two votes 92.5 and 81 percent of their members voted in favor of strike action. However, the harsh reality of living on strike pay is causing some union members to return back to the office.

It now seems that the International Air Transport Association thinks that the airline industry is going to have a major turnaround over the next 40 years. In fact, the association has been spelling out its vision for the whole industry by saying that it will be clean, safe and delay-free for world travelers by 2050.

Giovanni Bisignani, the International Air Transport Association chief executive, said that their new projections suggest that this year will see the first recovery of the airline industry since the economic downturn. Over the next 40 years, the airline industry will be very close to zero accidents. The airline industry will also be emitting about half of the carbon that it is currently producing.

A lot of this is due to the use of bio fuels. Bisignani said that today’s jet fuel just will not sustain the industry much longer. The biggest opportunity for the industry to cut down on carbon emissions is by using bio fuels. This could lower the industry’s carbon footprint by some 80 percent.

On top of this, consumers will be traveling with almost no delays. Right now it is suggested that a consolidation of air traffic control services will make air travel far more efficient. The International Air Transport Association says that the current system for air traffic control wastes some 16 million tonnes of CO2 a year in Europe alone. This is due to things like delays and, of course, indirect routing.

Mr Bisignani says that the recent global travel disruption that was caused by the volcanic ash was a wake up call to the airline industry. It was there to remind them that, without air connectivity, modern life is not possible.

The chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh, has just recently announced that he will not be backing down from the Unite union. This was the new message that he wanted to send to striking cabin crew members. Willie Walsh said that he will continue to fight for as long as it takes to win the battle.

Willie Walsh, when speaking at the International Air Transport Association’s annual summit in Berlin, gave his clearest signal yet that he would someday break the stranglehold that the union has on the airline. He said that he does not think that they have ever been brave enough in the past to stand up and just say no. Now they are going to hold out for as long as it takes, and they will continue to build up the amount of flying that they do during the strikes.

The carrier has recently racked up some £531 million in pretax losses for the financial year to March 31. Walsh went on to say that it’s not about travel right now, this is not the issue at the heart of the dispute. It is about ensuring that the airline has the cost base that it needs to have an equal footing with its competitors. The industry needs to change, and British Airways cannot ignore the inefficiency they see.

The airline did report that it was losing about £7 million a day from the walkouts. The airline just recently suffered its 21st day of strike action this year. The latest five-day strike will end today. British Airways says that a record number of cabin crew are now deciding to cross the picket line.

Despite this ongoing industrial action, the airline has been handling itself very well. They have been able to fly about 80 percent of long haul flights from Heathrow. Other airports like London City and Gatwick remain unaffected.

By now, most people have more than likely heard about the ongoing cabin crew strike at British Airways. Just recently both sides tried, yet again, to reach and agreement, but it failed. It now seems that the next planned 5-day strike is very likely to take place.

Despite the fact that British Airways has been under a lot of pressure, the airline did receive some encouraging words from a very unlikely person. Rival airline Ryanair’s chief executive, Michael O’Leary, said that the British Airways management is doing a great job. He said that he is impressed with the airline’s fight to break the union strangle hold on the airline. He finished up by adding that a more intelligent union leader would do a deal.

Right now the main sticking point between the Unite union and British Airways in on the removal of travel perks from staff that took part in the strikes. The Unite union wants all travel perks fully restored. However, the airline said that any members that take part in the strike will lose their travel concessions.

The airline did go on to say that they were willing to reinstate the travel concessions, but only if the members were treated as new recruits. This was a deal that the Unite union did not go for. The union did say that if the airline would agree to reinstate travel perks, then they would call off the strikes.

Either way, the union’s power has started to fade during the strikes. During the first strikes in March, British Airways was able to fly 60 percent of its long haul network. Which was good, but there was still 40 percent of people that were not flying. This time the airline was able to fly 70 percent of its long haul network. This is a number that the airline said that it will increase to 80 percent during the next five day strike.

The battle between British Airways and the Unite union is far from over. This bad news for travel comes as the union kicks off another five days of strikes. These strikes will affect half-term holidays and could even be followed by more action starting on June 5th. These strikes have been brought on by disputes centered around pay, jobs and working conditions.

The talks between the airline and the Unite union ended this past Friday without an agreement. Conciliation service Acas said talks had been adjourned, and it would now try to arrange further negations between the two sides.

The airline did say that it hopes to operate even more flights than what it said it would be able to. This good news for travelers comes as more cabin crew than expected decided to turn up for work as normal. The chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh, met with the Unite join leaders Derek Simpson and Tony Woodley. During these meetings they tried to reach a settlement over travel perks.

Unite said that 121 flights out of 333 scheduled at Heathrow did not take off on Friday. The airline said it will increase its Heathrow long-haul schedule to more than 70 percent. This is up from the 60 percent that the company announced last week. The airline also said that it hopes to increase its short-haul flights to 55 percent, up from 50 percent last week. The airline said that it would continue to fly to every short-haul destination on its network.

The Unite union offered to call of the strikes for now if Mr Walsh would agreed to restore travel perks to cabin crew that took part in the strikes. Walsh agreed to restore travel perks, but only if the striking crew were treated as new recruits.

The British Airways cabin crew have just recently begun the first of its strikes against the airline. Some last minute talks to stop the strikes fell through after the meeting was broken up by outside protesters on Saturday. Further negotiations between the two parties failed to materialize due to a lack of agreement on travel perks.

Despite this big walkout, the airline said that it remains very focused on flying as many passengers as possible during the first of the three five-day strikes. Services to the most popular destinations in Europe, which does include Amesterdam, Paris, and Brussels, have been canceled by the airline. This is to help pump up its resources in keeping its profitable long haul routes open. However, there is likely to still be some disruptions in services between New York and Dubai.

The airline said that it plans to fly about 60,000 people a day this week. This is still about 30,000 fewer than what it did during May last year. British Airways has trained 1,000 volunteers as emergency cabin crew and said that is non-unionized workers from overseas centers will be called on to plug the gaps.

A spokeswoman for British Airways said that Monday saw a large number of cabin crew members report to work as normal. This leads the airline to believe that it will be able to perform at levels expected. This means that the airline hopes to fly 60 percent of its long haul fights and 50 percent of its short haul services. In total, 70 percent of its passengers are getting on their flights. There are thousands more that have already been put on other airlines.
