North West England and Scotland See Travel Problems Due to Floods
by Howard Williams November 23rd, 2009
Reports now show that rail services throughout much of Scotland and North West England have been very badly affected due to floods. These floods have caused travel problems, like trains not running and some buses that would have replaced them unable to operate in many areas.
On top of this, many of the main roads, which includes A66 in Cumbria, were closed by the Highways Agency due to the floods as well. Among some of the areas where trains were unable to operate include Carlisle to Maryport in Cumbria, Dundee to Aberdeen, Carlisle to Carstairs, and Glasgow to Dunblane.
The services run by CrossCountry, ScotRail, East Coast and Northern Rail were all affected too. Passengers suffered cancellations and service alterations. The First TransPennie Express and Virgin Trains services were also hit due to a landslip between Carlisle and Penrith North Lakes.
Of course, roads were also hit very badly as well. A big section of A66 in Cumbrai is now closed in both directions. A big series of accidents has also led to delays on other main routes, which includes M4 in west London, the M20 in Kent, the A1 in Northumberland, the A628 in Derbyshire, the, A14 in Northamptonshire, and the M48 in Gloucestershire.
In mid and north Wales, where other road closures have been seen, train services have been disrupted and power to almost 2,000 homes in Anglesey has been cut. The motoring organization’s water rescue technician, Richard Westermoreland, said that the conditions in Cumbria have been very bad. He noted that it was the worst that he has ever seen.
