It now seems that UK workers waste about 4.6 million hours every day commuting to work. However, not only is this a waste of their time, but this also accounts for just over a fifth of the UK’s carbon footprint. This research was released just recently to coincide with the launch of the National Commute Smart Week.

A survey of 2,000 workers found that 62 percent of the respondents want to reduce the amount of time they travel to and from work. A third of these people would like to be given the option to work more frequently from home or other remote locations in order to reduce the time they have to spend communing every single day. Not only would this help free up the roads for more travel, but it would also cut down on the UK’s carbon footprint.

The survey itself was commissioned by Citrix GoToMyPC which is a provider of remote working technology. Thus, it’s pretty easy to see what this company had to benefit from the survey. The survey did go on to show that many UK workers endure a high level of stress over daily commute. Forty-two percent are saying that they are angered by being stuck in traffic. Another 38 percent are normally frustrated by public transport problems. Many problems come from trying to commute to work so early in the morning when it is still dark outside.

However, about a half of the respondents said that their employers would not allow them to work from home or undertake any kind of flexible hours to avoid the lengthy commutes. Thus, some experts feel something should be done on companies’ stances on not allowing workers to work from home if they so choose. As long as the work gets done, it should not matter.
