International Passenger Protection Says British Holidaymakers Could Get Stranded this Winter
by Isabel Taylor November 9th, 2009
It now seems that a lot of worries have been brought up regarding British holidaymakers and this season’s winter travel. This is due to the fact that many people and agencies are worried that a lot of travelers are going to be left stranded abroad due to a number of airlines facing bankruptcy.
The International Passenger Protection, also known as the IPP, says that almost 32 airlines collapsed this year alone. However, they went on to say that this is a number that is set to rise over the holiday period. This is due to the rising fuel costs, the global recession and, of course, the increase on the Air Passenger Duty tax.
A spokesman for the International Passenger Protection said that airlines budget for two peak seasons, which are summer and Christmas. However, this month’s rises in Air passenger Duty tax and the recent increase in the cost of fuel are putting the airline industry under a lot of pressure. Some say that this is more pressure than the airline industry can stand to handle at this point in time. Adding the fact that people are less likely to travel this season because of the recession, people are worried of even more airlines closing.
Just last week a very deadly increase in the Air Passenger Duty tax was put in position to make a big hurting on the airline industry. This tax has added a £1-£2 to the cost of a short-haul flight and a 5-£10 to the cost of a medium-haul flight. However, it’s the long haul flights, which saw a £10-£30 increase, that really saw the big hit. A survey that was recently taken showed that 75 percent of Britons are planning to flying less due to the increase in charges.
