Car hirers looking for a good value getaway may be surprised to find that travel guide company Lonely Planet has named London as one of the top 10 of the world’s best-value destinations due to the plummeting pound.

The guide introduced the review of London by saying that every economic crisis has a silver lining.

The review went on to point out that once ludicrously expensive, the British capital has become far more affordable for residents from overseas, if not for residents.  The favourable exchange rate meant that travellers would often find hotels and meals up to half the price they were a few years ago, according to Lonely Planet.

Editor of Lonely Planet Tom Hall added that the tables have turned and the perception that London was one of the world’s most expensive cities is over.

Other value-for-money destinations to make the top 10 list included Iceland, South Africa, Las Vegas and Kenya.

The guide also listed the Lake District as one of the world’s top 10 regions, describing the area as all that’s green, great and about the English landscape.

Other praise was given to Cork in Ireland, which joined the likes of Istanbul, Vancouver and Singapore as being rated as one of the world’s top 10 cities, describing the small Irish city as at the top of its game.

Other events and places from the British Isles’ to feature in the guide’s Best in Travel 2010 include the Glastonbury Festival, the 100 Club in London, the London Underground and the county of Somerset.
