British Airways Talks on New Baggage Charges Next Month
by Isabel Taylor October 29th, 2009
It seems that British Airways has now come forward to talk about the new baggage charges that passengers will be facing next month. This new rise in baggage charges, as some have already heard, will be increasing the amount it costs to check in a third bag for long haul flights. This new increase will see the price go up from £32 to £72, starting November 10th, for economy class passengers.
British Airways has noted that if the bag is checked in at the airport and not online, then the new fee will be as much as £90. These increases are just the latest in a long series of additional charges that have been hitting airlines in recent months. British Airways has been one such airline that has been introducing a long list of additional charges. The airline lost £401 million in the last financial year, and that could be part of the reason why all of these new charges have popped up all of the sudden.
British Airways has pretty much fell into line with a number of American airlines, which have imposed a $50 levy on passengers who check in a second bag on transatlantic flights. The carrier has also introduced a charge for passengers who wish to choose their seat more than 24 hours ahead of their flight time.
Of course, a British Airways spokesperson was very quick to point out that these new charges would actually affect only a very small amount of passengers who carry on a large amount of luggage. For others, this charge will not even be noticed. The new charges were actually scheduled to be introduced this month, but they have been delayed because of a need to update the airline’s computer system. However, the new charges are still coming out.
