It now seems that the International Civil Aviation Organization is calling for an annual 2 percent improvement in fuel efficiency in aircrafts. The group adopted this new target and said that this 2 percent improvement would last until 2050.

This decision was made at the International Civil Aviation Organization High Level Meeting on International Aviation and Climate Change at the main headquarters in Montreal. This choice is different than the 1.5 percent annual fuel efficiency improvement to 2020 that was suggested by the aviation bodies themselves.

At this meeting, however, the International Civil Aviation Organization did not address carbon taxes or emissions trading at all. Furthermore, they did not agree on a global approach on environmental matters. They did say that they would look at the feasibility of the carbon neutral growth and emissions reductions.

The director general and CEO of the International Civil Aviation Organization, Giovanni Bisignani, said that they have taken steps in the right direction towards a global approach to the environment. Of course, he also noted that there is still a lot of ground to cover either way.

Givoanni said that, as a united industry, they remain committed to their environmental targets. The government has already taken notes on their targets and agrees that they must work with the industry to secure a sustainable future for aviation.

Right now companies all over the world are doing what they can to be eco friendly. However, airlines have a lot to worry about, as they are now having to fight off the growth of rails, which are proving to have lower fares and be better for the environment.
