British Airways on the Edge of Confrontation with Unions
by Amy Drew October 9th, 2009
It now seems that the well known UK carrier, British Airways, could be coming nearer to some very bad confrontations with unions. This news comes just after British Airways announced its plans for 1,700 job cuts and pay freezes.
The Unite union went on to accuse the airline of intimidating its workers to accept pay freezes. On top of this, the union goes on to say that the decision to cut another 1,000 jobs and force another 3,000 to work as part time workers is disgraceful.
Either way, British Airways remains unchanged in its choice to go ahead with the job cuts. This decision to cut another 1,000 jobs came after an emergency meeting was called earlier this week. A spokesperson for the company said that the changes that have been announced will not alter any of the terms and conditions for individual members of the existing crew. He went on to point out that the carrier had been discussing these changes and cuts since January. He also pointed out that the cabin crew that are leaving the company have volunteered to do so.
British Airways went on to say that they will not be recruiting any new crew for some time. It seems likely that the carrier will not add any new members until the company is in position to grow. They said that they are always open to talks with their trade unions, but either way, the announcement will go ahead as planned. These changes are set to be in place come the end of next month, and the wheels have already been put into motion.
