New reports now show that British Airways said last Tuesday that it would have to make new cuts to its cabin crew. The airline goes on to say that it would have to make the equivalent of 1,700 cuts to its staff in the UK. They also noted that they are planning on doing a two year pay freeze on basic pay for cabin crew.

The financially troubled airline said that these changes would be taking place starting at the end of November. This comes just after 1,000 cabin crew members said they would take voluntary redundancies, and another 3,000 offered to switch to part time work.

The carrier said that it has consulted with its staff on these moves. They also noted that they were not changing anything that required any form of negotiation. British Airways went on to say in a statement that they will not alter contractual terms and conditions for individual crew members. They will also not be reducing the number of working crew on board.

British Airways did note that, without the changes, they will lose more money with every month that goes by. It is very essential that the airline makes itself more efficient in order to survive the economic downturn and turn their sights towards the future.

Many other airlines and holiday groups have already gone under due to the rough economic climate. This has been due to the fact that many holidaymakers are opting to stay at home during these troubled times and keep their money in the bank. Although things are starting to improve, it will still be over a year before airlines start to recover.
