Airline asks passengers to use toilet prior to boarding
by Natalie Cooper October 7th, 2009
Japanese airline All Nippon Airways has started asking passengers to make use of the toilet prior to boarding in a bid to reduce aircraft weight.
The airline has announced that “toilet monitors” would be located by the boarding gates in departure lounges to ask waiting passengers to relieve themselves before boarding the aircraft.
The airline is under the belief that empty bladders will equate to lighter passengers, which will ultimately mean lighter aircraft and a reduction in fuel use.
All Nippon Airways started the unique policy on October 1st as an experiment, which will last one month, however may extend the trial if it’s successful and well-received by passengers.
The airline hopes to achieve a reduction of five-tonnes in carbon emissions over the trial month.
All Nippon Airways is the lastest airline to implement extreme cost-cutting measures, with the UK’s Ryanair removing check-in desks and passengers printing their own baggage tags.
