Some experts have now said that it looks likes British Airways has been going through an identity crisis due to the latest moves to cut costs. United, one of the leading trade unions, said that the airline was following some of the same moves that low cost carriers have already introduced. This includes things like charging passengers for seat reservations. United went on to say that this kind of move can lead to driving customers away.

United also said that this tarnishes the airline’s image, and it is another attempt to mimic low budget airlines. At some point, passengers will have to wonder what the difference is between flying with British Airways and flying with other budget airlines in the area.

Steve Turner, the National Officer, said that this was complete madness and accused the management team of British Airways of rapidly losing its way. United, among other unions, has been involved in long running talks with British Airways over its cost cutting measures. This includes things like job cuts and pay freezes. All of these cost cutting measures represent British Airway’ attempt to fight off huge losses.

Steve went on to say that United is becoming increasingly frustrated with British Airways’ attempts at addressing the changing industry. It’s frustrating to see the airline turning itself into a budget airline by practicing some of the same ideas used by low cost carriers, he stressed. He said that British Airways is not a low cost carrier and will not be able to successfully compete in this kind of marketplace.
