Hotels.com Announces UK Travelers Looking Elsewhere for Vacations
by Howard Williams September 28th, 2009
It now seems that UK travelers are doing whatever they can to, not only get out of the UK, but to get out of Europe, as the Pound continues to drop in value. This information comes from Hotels.com, showing that British travelers are much more interested inn vacation spots outside of Europe.
Hotels.com has now reported that there has been a big surge in searches for breaks where the pound remains relatively strong against the local currencies. This is not the case for Europe, where the euro seems to be getting the better end of the deal against the pound.
The biggest increase in searches actually occurred for the Moroccan city of Marrakech. Now that the pound has weakened, the searches for hotels in this city are up 250 percent. This is, by far, this biggest jump out of any other city. Other places, like hotel rooms in Reykjavik, are up 60 percent.
Another reasons why UK travelers could be choosing these cities is for the simple fact that all of these destinations that have seen an increase, with the exception of Istanbul, have seen the average cost of hotel rooms fall. Thus, UK travelers are finding that, in areas outside of Europe, their pound is worth more, and there are better deals on hotels. This means for some British families, that did not think that they could take a vacation, a holiday is finally within their grasp.
The director of communications at Hotels.com, Alison Couper, said that there has never been a better time for UK travelers to try out other cities. They go on to question why not swap out a vacation in Rome for one in Reykhavik or a break in Paris for one in Prague.
