Travel Association, the ABTA, has recorded the number of overseas trips made by Britons to be at an all-time high.

The association’s spokesperson said that currently there are a large number of last minute bookings for flights as people are concerned about their job security.

“Historically speaking, we are seeing all-time highs for the number of trips we are taking abroad but again, with the recession, [the decrease in the number of trips abroad] was bound to happen. It would have been a surprise if it hadn’t.”

The Office for National Statistics reports trips abroad by Britons are down by 6 percent and have fallen from 70.2 million to 66 million in the past year.

Holiday companies are reporting an increase of interest in last minute abroad holidays, with poor weather in the UK and many struggling tour operators, airlines and hotels to increase tourist numbers.

A recent Post Office holiday costs survey found that based on ten holiday items including food and drink, Turkey, Croatia and Bulgaria are the cheapest places to stay.
