Trinidad and Tobago Government Says Island is Safe
by Amy Drew August 10th, 2009
Officials from the Trinidad and Tobago Government say that safety is improving on the island despite the recent assault on two Britons. These new attacks have some tourists sacred to travel to this popular destination.
A British couple was just recently attacked by a man with a machete at their home in Bacelot in southern Tobago just last Saturday. The attacker left the couple with very life threatening injuries. Just earlier this month another British woman was the victim of, not only a robbery, but sexual assault as well in her villa in the Black Rock area. A Swedish couple, last year, was found murdered in their villa in Bon Accord.
Officials from the Trinidad and Tobago Government have come forward in an attempt to ease fears over safety. A spokesman for the country’s division of Tourism and Transportation said, “We are confident that this [the fall in crime against tourists] has resulted from the number of initiatives which have been instituted over the last year.”
He went on to say, “These include increased joint patrols with the police and defense force, increased surveillance at tourism hot spots. We are determined to keep Tobago a safe place to live and visit and are doing everything in our power to eradicate such heinous crimes.”
Of course, the Foreign Office says that there are a high level of violent crimes on the islands, which just so happen to be the area where almost 60,000 British holidaymakers spend their vacations each year. The Foreign Office goes on to say, “Caution is advised when renting villas and visitors to Tobago should ensure all villas have adequate security measures, including the provision of external security lighting, grills and 24-hour security guards.”
