Ryanair Jumps Ahead of easyJet
by Amy Drew August 7th, 2009
Reports have now shown that Ryanair has come out ahead of its low cost rival easyJet in its July traffic figures. Ryanair went on to say that its passenger traffic grew by almost 19 percent during the month to 6.7 million. This would be a new monthly traffic record for them.
However, easyJet also proved to remain strong in the downturn with an increase of 4.3 percent. This brought their passenger numbers up to 4.66 million for the month. They also reported that their load factor increase by 1 percent to 90.3 percent.
Ryanair went on to attribute its growth in passengers to the people that are switching over from using the transitional flag carriers to take advantage of the lower prices that Ryanair has to offer. Some flag carriers that could be losing passengers to Ryanair include British Airways, Air France, Aer Lingus, and Lufthansa. However, the load factor, or the number of passengers as a proportion of the number of seats available, did remain flat at just 89 percent.
Daniel de Caryahlho from Ryanair said that the carrier continues to grow its traffic strongly each month. This has been happening as passengers switch to Ryanair, its low fares and no fuel surcharges from other competitors.
Right now, Ryanair has now carried 19 percent more passengers this July than during the same time last year. The carrier has carried almost three times as much as British Airways worldwide recent traffic. Some experts say that it would appear that Ryanair is quickly emerging as one of the world’s most favorite airlines.
