Qatar Announces Big Expansion for Europe
by Ted Harris July 28th, 2009
Qatar Airways just announced on July 27 that they are planning for a major expansion of its services in Europe. The Doha-based carrier said that it is planing a 40 percent rise in frequency to places like Greece, Sweden, France, and even Spain. The airline went on to say that it is increasing the number of weekly flights between Doha and Paris from 11 to 14. This makes it a twice daily service starting October 25.
The services that will be on route to Madrid will be increasing from four a week to daily flights starting December 2. Their service to the area started about four years ago and is the only one between the Gulf and Spain.
The Athens service will also be increasing. It will be rising from a current daily flight to two a day by the time March 2010 rolls around. Even Stockholm will see an increase in frequency of flights from three to four a week starting October 25.
The Qatar CEO, Akbar Al Baker, said that they are constantly looking for ways to offer their passengers improved levels of service. Thus, they are always looking to give their customers more connections and more choices across a global network. He also noted that Europe is one of their most important regions as it represents about 20 percent of their global coverage.
Qatar is not the only airline that is looking to expand. Other airlines around the world are also looking at adding some more routes. However, experts point out that this is a big deal, because most airlines are looking to cut back on flights, so airlines like Qatar that are looking to add flights could not have chosen a better time.
