Millions of people who use Britain’s busiest rail routes will be offered the prospect of faster and more reliable trains. This will happen now that the government has unveiled plans for major electrification for the first time since rail privatization. This is going to offer cleaner journeys as well.

The routes between London and Swansea will be the first to be electrified since 1991. The main route from Liverpool to Manchester, which was the world’s first inter city railway, is also set to be converted. The journey times from London to Swansea will be cut by as much as 19 minutes after electrification. However, the time between Liverpool and Manchester will fall to 30 minutes. This is down from the 45 minutes that it use to take to make the trip.

Although many are happy about this move, this announcement will be a big disappointment to passengers in the East Midlands. That is because they were in strong support of the electrification of the line from London to Nottingham and Sheffield. However, the Department of Transport reminds these people not to worry, because electrification plans for thee routes are being considered as well. However, it is still unlikely that work will start before 2017.

These plans will be unveiled at a cabinet meeting in Cafdiff. It is here where Gordon Brown, the prime minister, will say that the electrification program is a very vital need to building a 21st century transportation system.

Compared to diesel trains, the electric trains are, not only cheaper to buy, but cheaper to operate as well. They also produces fewer carbon emissions, and they tend to break down a lot less. The trains also move at a much faster rate.
