Travellers whose holidays are spoiled by inclement weather can now receive insurance payouts as French travel agencies introduced insurance cover for unwanted interruptions to the sunshine.

Launched by holiday groups Pierre et Vacances and FranceLo, The policy would allow holiday-makers to claim back a portion of the cost of their trip if they suffer at least four days of rain in one week.

“Aon France allows Pierre & Vacances to propose its clients with automatic reimbursement for part of their stay…if weather conditions don’t meet expectations,” the group said in a statement.

Aon France plan to use satellite images obtained by the French weather bureau ito calculate how much the policy holders would be compensated.

Holidays which are interrupted by rain can be worth up to 400 euros and holiday-makers would be informed by E-Mail or SMS whether they would be liable to claim compensation. Those who will be compensated will receive a cheque in the mail after returning from their trip.

The man behind the idea, Herv Kayser, told French daily newspaper Le Figaro that in a trial last year, 10 percent of those interested in the insurance policy witnessed sufficient rain to receive money back on their holiday.
