Many crucial talks have been underway from British Airways. All of these talks have one thing in common, and that is to see how British Airways can cut costs. A lot of these talks did include thousands of people losing their jobs as time is running out for British Airways to be able to make any kind of deal.
The airline has already set a deadline for the other day for approving cost savings. This included around 3,500 job cuts. All of these job losses come after reporting huge losses of more than £401 million last year.
The company and the unions have agreed on one thing, and that is to not comment on the talks that have been going on. Many sources say that, unless a last minute breakthrough is to happen, these talks will end in a disagreement.
It is already said that there are a number of sticking points that the two sides are disagreeing over. A lot of it is believed to revolve around outsourcing jobs. The unions did agree to have changes made temporary until the economy and the airline position improve. However, British Airways wants permanent changes.
Right now, pay cuts were agreed to by British Airways pilots earlier this month. If these talks are not settled soon, then a dispute could lead to a ballot for industrial action. This would threatening disruption during the already busy summer period.
A lot of union leaders were very angry last week when they heard from British Airways that almost 7,000 staff had already applied for voluntary pay cuts. This included 800 people who said that they would work unpaid for a month.
