Ad by easyJet is Grounded for being Misleading about CO2 Claims
by Fiona Scott July 4th, 2008
easyJet has been reprimanded again by the Advertising Standards Authority, because they made misleading claims on carbon dioxide in an ad for the national press. The watchdog of advertising supported the complaint of a viewer that believes that the easyJet ad confused the airline’s emissions for each passenger with their total carbon dioxide aircraft emissions. The ad was made in-house and stated that they emit 22 percent less carbon dioxide, which is based off of the emissions for each passenger and not for their aircrafts or the airline as a whole as suggested in the ad.
The Advertising Standards Authority said that because they didn’t fully explain the basis of their claim in the ad, it was misleading in that it implied that their aircrafts were more efficient environmentally than other aircrafts that traditional airlines use. easyJet was told to make sure that they explain their comparison basis when they create ads in the future.
This is not the first time easyJet has created misleading ads, though. Recently, in March, the Advertising Standards Authority had to ban an ad where easyJet promoted cheap flights during the summer, which was a complained by Ryanair that the airlines’ fares were misleading in comparison to easyJet’s terms and conditions. The next month, an ad was banned for the promotion of discounted airfares that neither the airline or the complainants were able to locate. Also, in April of last year, an easyJet ad made claim that their aircrafts emitted 30% less emission for each passenger per mile than other airlines.
