Empty planes were flown out of Manchester and Gatwick airports earlier this week by Thomson and First Choice Holidays to pick up holidaymakers form Cancun. However, only the holidaymakers that were due to return will be allowed to return. Many people have been trying to get back home to Britain in light of the new Swine Flu that has killed many people in Mexico already.
Originally, these scheduled flights were suppose to take holidaymakers to Cancun. However, all outbound holiday flights to Cancun, as well as Conzumel, have been canceled until after May 8. This all came after the Foreign and Commonwealth Office gave their advisory late Monday night.
Thomson made an announcement yesterday that said that all UK customers who are currently in Cancun will be returning to the UK on their booked flights. As of right now, Thomson has well over 2,000 customers in Mexico. Furthermore, there are estimated to be almost 10,000 Britons in Mexico right now. Thomson has had to cancel all outbound flights to Cancun for the next seven days.
Other travel insurance companies have also let travelers know that anyone who chooses to travel to Mexico despite the advice given out by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and should fall ill, their insurance is unlikely to cover any treatment cost.
Some airlines, like British Airways, are still offering four flights a week to Mexico City. However, they are offering customers a chance to make amendments to their travel dates if they wish. Many travel companies are offering customers free amendments to their holiday and allowing them to select different destinations because of the canceled flights to Cancun.
