The major airports in Ireland are facing a possible closure later on this month. This is due to the Trade Union’s threat to take action against the pension reform for the public sector workers. The strike is planned for March 30, and could cause more than 75,000 flights to be disrupted. This would most likely cause the country’s three biggest airports to shut down.

In order to see who was in favor of a strike and who was against it, The Irish Congress of Trade Unions (also called ICTU) sent out thousands of ballot papers to trade union members. This move has been caused by the rising number of protesters that have been taking to the streets of Dublin. Over 120,000 unemployed protesters came out to support the cause.

Although a strike seems to be in the works, a spokeswoman for the Dublin Airport Authority made note that it was still too early to know if the strike would get the go ahead. She also pointed out that most of these kinds of issues go unresolved until the last minute. However, more news on the strike would be expected later this week as the end of the month draws nearer.

The Dublin Airport, which is the busiest airport in Ireland is the headquarters of Aer Lingus. This airport handles over 60,000 travelers a day. Most of these travelers are international passengers. Experts note that shutting down the airport would put even a bigger strain on the economy, as no international travelers would be able to get into Ireland. However, if a strike was to happen, not shutting down the airport would be almost impossible.
