By October of this year, Ryanair the budget airline, hopes to do away with check in desks. This would leave their customers with only the option of checking in online. By doing this, Ryanair will be able to increase the speed of their check in process. This would enable fliers who only have carry on bags to print their boarding cards from home and then go directly to the security checks at the airport. The passengers that do have bags to check in will be able to use the Ryanair drop desk.

The move from check in desks to online check ins will take place October 1, 2009. Online bag check in will be a first for the airline industry as a whole. By being able to get rid of the check in desks, Ryanair will be able to provide even lower cost plane tickets for its customers. According to Ryanair, almost three quarters of all their customers use online check in already. Thus, Ryanair feels that most people will welcome this change.

To get the ball rolling, Ryanair wants to start phasing the plan in this month. People who have only hand luggage will already be able to check in online for free. People who have baggage that has to be checked in will have to pay £5 per flight. The people who do not check in online but check in at the airport will have to pay £10.

Also in October, Ryanair has made note that all children who are under 16, will not be able to travel without an adult. Also going into affect will be the new photo identification rules. After October, only national identity cards, as well passports, will be accepted as forms of photo identification.
