Tourists Now Banned from Traveling to Tibet due to 60th Anniversary Celebration
by Isabel Taylor June 15th, 2011
Hopefully there are no tourists out there that were planning on traveling to Tibet any time soon. This is because tourists are now banned from traveling to this area as China gets ready to celebrate its 60th year anniversary of its rule over Tibet. This is now the second time this year alone that tourists have been banned from traveling to this area. This is likely because the anniversary pays tribute to a very “controversial” rule in this area.
The news of the travel ban is likely to upset some travelers who were hoping to explore the Himalayan region. Some reports are saying that this ban is likely to be in place until August.
Hannah Methven, of specialist tour operator Explore, said that tourist permits are currently not being granted for travel that falls between June 25 and July 25 of this year. This does mark the 60th anniversary of Tibet’s incorporation into the People’s Republic of China.
The group went on to say that, because of this, they have had to cancel all of its tour schedule for Tibet during this time. All customers who have already booked tours are being given the option to join alternative trips or get a full refund.
However, as stated earlier, some media sources are suggesting that the ban could be in effect past July 25. They are saying that most tourists are not going to be allowed to travel to Tibet until around mid-August. This is mostly due to safety concerns.
As some already know, Tibet came under Chinese control back in 1951 following a military conflict. Ever since then, the situation has provoked protest and unrest.
