bmi Cuts all Jersey Flights from Heathrow
by Amy Drew January 16th, 2009
bmi has announced that Jersey is going to be losing their direct link with London Heathrow in March. This loss is set to leave the Channel Islands of Jersey without services from Heathrow at all.
bmi is blaming the situation of the economy for the decision, and given the state of the pound in the United Kingdom against the euro, a lot of people are thought to be planning holidays in the United Kingdom this year. It is because of this as to why Jersey is anticipated to have a glooming summer, as well as see an increase of domestic tourism.
Bmi has expressed their regret for canceling all of the Jersey flights, as they have only offered the service for 2 years. In a statement, the company said that the Jersey service had unfortunately not been able to achieve an acceptable financial performance level due to the economic downturn and increases in costs.
Peter Spencer, the Managing Director at bmi, said that they have had to make this decision with a heavy heart, as the association between Jersey and the airline goes back for decades, and they are proud of their relationship. They made efforts to modify the flights in order to improve efficiency, he continued, but they see little profitability to be achieved in the future.
However, while the airline is cutting their flights to Jersey, they are also increasing their services to Aberdeen from Birmingham, operating 3 services now. This is due to flights being targeted to business travelers for that area, and figures show that these passengers are more prepared to pay higher prices on fares than leisure passengers.
