Birmingham International Airport Expansion Shaping Up
by Natalie Cooper December 23rd, 2008
The Birmingham International Airport reached a project milestone in building a new international pier by putting the last steel frame into place on the main building of the pier. This building is going to provide the airport and their passengers with facilities for handling an increase in demand, as well as more international flights. When the structure is finally finished, it is going to provide parking facilities that will be used for next-generation, wide-bodied planes, like the A350 by Airbus and the 787 Dreamliner from Boeing.
The pier project for the Birmingham International Airport was started in June, costing £45 million. It represents the single largest investment that the airport has done in more than 20 years. Will Heynes, the Operations Director at the Birmingham International Airport, said that Friday signified completing the main steel structure. They are beginning to really see the building take shape, he continued, which will become an important part in the airport’s strategy for airlines that are long-haul, as well as help the airport meet its ambitions for providing services around the world from the Midlands. He also added that the new international pier will be essential for the infrastructure of the airport if they get approval for a runway expansion.
People who live in the West Midlands and have construction jobs are benefiting from the major expansion work. If the runway expansion is approved, further construction at the airport would create more jobs for the workers. Residents in the area have also backed the runway expansion, as it would provide the local economy with a needed boost.
