Wimbledon Star Fined £10,000 For Spitting
by Isabel Taylor June 28th, 2010
Reports are now showing that the alleged abuse and drunken behavior of four youths are said to be the reason behind Victor Hanescu’s controversial exit. The four youths, three Brits and one Irishman, were arrested and bailed already. A decision on whether to charge them will be made after police have completed their investigation. This is now believed to be the very first instance of court side hooliganism in Wimbledon’s 133-year history.
The star was fined $15,000 just last week when he spat towards the crowd and walked off the court when he was leading Daniel Brands, of Germany, 3 – 0 in the fifth set on Friday. Hanescu apologized for his actions and said that he lost his control briefly in the fifth set after another insult from someone in the crowd. He said that he should have never done that, but he is human, after all, and does make mistakes.
A statement from the All England Club said that following a review, Victor has been fined $7,500 for unsportsmanlike conduct and a further $7,500 for not using best efforts at the conclusion of the match. No further comments will be made by the referee or the chair umpire.
As of now, Hanescu could be charged by police with common assault if he is found guilty of spitting and hitting a member of the public. The four young men were in a seated area of the court, and they started allegedly abusing Victor with words. He complained to the umpire about it and became frustrated when the same group continued with their rude remarks.
