Germany Able to Beat England in the World Cup
by Fiona Scott June 28th, 2010
It has been a very sad World Cup for England fans. The World Cup started off with two ties for the England team before they got their first win. However, more bad news was on the way for England as their team lost to Germany in the Round of 16 knockout matches. Germany was able to beat England 4 – 1.
Thomas Mueller, from the German team, was able to score twice in the second half on Sunday. The 20-year-old German was able to forward finish two quick German counterattacks within 3 minutes. This, of course, sunk England’s hopes of beating Germany at the World Cup for the first time since the 1966 final. On top of this, England had a goal that was not awarded by the referee. All of this added up for a very big win for Germany to move on.
Of course, England’s loss would have not looked so bad had referee Jorge Larrionda not made a bad call on a clear English goal. A first half shot by Frank Lampoard landed well past the goal line after hitting the crossbar. At the time, Germany was leading 2 – 1.
Germany was able to go up on England with goals by by Miroslav Klose and Lukas Podolsi. On Lampard’s “should of been goal”, the ball landed inside the goal, then spun back into the arms of Germany goalkeeper Mauel Neuer. The Enlgand coach was sure that it was a goal and started to celebrate. However, his face changed when he noticed that the goal was not being counted.
