London Airports to See Help From UK Government Taskforce
by Fiona Scott June 16th, 2010
It now appears that the UK Transport Secretary, Philip Hammond, has just recently set up a taskforce to improve the efficiency of air travel to and from southeast England. This news comes just after the government vetoed the expansion of the Heathrow, Gatwick, and Stansted airports.
Mr Hammond said that they have been very clear in their opposition of adding additional runways at Gatwick, Stansted, and Heathrow airports. Thus, the challenge for the government now is to make things better within the existing runway capacity. The taskforce that the government will send in will help to secure the successful future of aviation in the southeast using only the existing runways.
The taskforce itself will be made up of representatives of passenger groups, airlines, industry bodies, and of course environmental groups. He said that, overall, he has a very clear vision of the their airports. This vision includes providing shorter queues, less hassle, and better service for passengers at these airports. He finished up by saying that it is absolutely crucial that they get this right. The success of the airline industry is very important to the UK’s economy.
Overall, the airline industry and airports in London have been quite upset about the fact that the new government has chosen not to let the new runways get built. As soon as the new government came into power, it wasted no time in setting up its new ideas and putting them into affect. That is why it is very important for this new taskforce to be successful. The government needs this taskforce to work in order to win back the approval of both airlines and airports.
