Scandic Hotels has led the way for years in environmental issues worldwide, and is now branching out. The hotel chain plans to use its hotels as a sales platform for “charity water”. Basically, the hotel chain will stock its hotels with bottled water that can be purchased on site. For each bottle of water sold, Scandic will donate 10 euro cents to the Scandic Sustainability Fund, a brand-new charitable organization that will “contribute to a more sustainable society.”

Scandic has already begun to make a conscious worldwide effort to lower its carbon emissions. One way that they have done this is by putting a stop to the sale of off-the-shelf bottle water in their hotels. Their new bottled water will bring environmentally safe bottled water back onto the premises. “Scandic’s decision is the right one and something that will have many winners. Scandic is moving outside its own company to reward other key initiatives, which will hopefully inspire even more to contribute to a better world. This is something I clearly want to support,” says Swedish Olympic swimmer Therese Alshammar. Alshammar is the designer of the bottles used in the initiative.

The Scandic Sustainability Fund will supply grants to projects aimed at supporting sustainable development. It will support both corporate and home-grown methods of consumption reduction. Annually, the SSF will award the Scandic Sustainability Award, along with 100,000 euro will be given to the candidate who best expresses the sustainable living concept. Jan Peter Bergkvist, a Scandic VP, has said, “When you say sustainability, many people’s thoughts turn straight to environmental issues, but it may equally be a question of social work, accessibility, health issues and safety. Anything that helps to create a more robust society in the future.”
