Loganair Prepares to Cut Vital Services
by Stuart Parker June 25th, 2008
LOGANAIR Scotland’s Airline is the airline that flies to many of the more fragile and remote communities of the country, and they are preparing to shutdown some of their flights during the summer due to the increased cost of fuel. The passengers that have booked their flights already will be provided with same day flights, but the Prime Minister and Chancellor were called on by island representatives on Thursday night to recognize this serious development.
Despite the companies policy of planning periodic purchases of fuel, which is what protects them from the day-to-day fuel rises, they have decided to act on this development now. The industry of aviation is still enjoying an advantage that drivers are denied, because they don’t have to pay neither VAT nor excise tax on fuel. However, because kerosene prices have risen by 90% in the past year, the pressure is piling on, and Loganair is not the only airline that has had to act on this major increase.
Loganair has been flying as a British Airways franchisee, operating to Inverness, Shetland, Orkney, Lewis, Benbecula, Barra, Tiree, and Campbeltown. They will now be entering into a new franchise in October with Flybe, who just last week made the announcement that they are going to suspend one of their routes that operates between Newquay and Glasgow. Flybe said that this route was not flying enough passengers and that the service would be shutdown on the 2nd of August, and then the operation will be reinstated when fuel prices decrease.
