Airlines Reported to Charge People 5 Times More on Weekends Compared to Weekdays
by Howard Williams May 5th, 2010
According to new reports, Airlines are charging passengers up to 5 times more for flying with them over the weekend rather than booking their flight in the middle of the week. A tourists that is leaving from Birmingham on a Wednesday, on a bmi flight during June of this year, may pay a single air fare ticket of £27.04. However, that same flight, say on a Saturday, could cost as much as £154.04. A similar June mid-week flight from Gatwick to Malaga with easyJet is 138 percent cheaper than leaving the following Saturday. All of this is according to travelsupermarket.com.
Of course, Ryanair is not much better either. A flight with Ryanair from Gatwick to Alicante in mid-July is 110 percent cheaper than traveling on the following weened. This just proves that airlines market up their weekend prices, and they do it a lot.
The good news is that traditional business routes were found not to increase prices come the weekend, or at least not to the same extend that leisure routes are increased. The cheapest fares available on the following routes were the same Monday to Sunday on British Airways: London to Moscow, London to Geneva, London to Brussels and Manchester to London.
Travelsupermarket.com’s very own Peter Smith said that flying on the weekend often means not having to book time off of work. Flights tend to have most the demand on these days, and airlines mark it up. Of course, airlines are well aware of this market up. Their prices simply reflect how popular these dates and times are, or at least that is what carriers are saying.
