British Airways Still Reports Strong Numbers Despite Strike
by Stuart Parker March 29th, 2010
Apparently new reports show that British Airways has said that its services got off to a strong start despite the strike by thousands of cabin crew members. These cabin crew members continue to strike over cost cuts and changes to working conditions.
British Airways said that the number of cabin crew members reporting at Heathrow were at levels needed to operate its published schedule. The Unite union and British Airways have been clashing over the impact of the four day strike, which is set to end Tuesday night. British Airways claims that more flights were operating than during last week’s strike, but the union said that tons of services were being canceled.
The airline went on to say in a statement that cabin crew members were reporting to work like normal at Gatwick. Thus, this holds in line with what these cabin crew members did during last week’s strike as well. British Airways said that their aim is to continue to fly as many costumers as they can during the second part of this strike. The airline feels that the customers have done nothing wrong, and they do not need to be punished for it. Their operations performed very well over the weekend, and they were able to fly more than 75 percent of their customers to their destinations.
Of course, the carrier said that they were able operate 70 percent of their normal long haul flights. This was compared to last weeks 60 percent. They were also able to fly 55 percent of their short haul flights, which is up from 30 percent seen last week. Thus, it does appears as if numbers are improving for the airline.
