British Airways Strike Finally Comes After Talks Fail
by Natalie Cooper March 22nd, 2010
The cabin crew at British Airways are finally on strike after months of threatening to do so. This strike action actually came just hours after another collapse in talks between British Airways and the Unite union. These last meetings actually took place with Willie Walsh and the joint leader of Unite, Tony Woodley.
British Airways went on to say in a statement that they are very disappointed that, despite very lengthy negotiations, Unite has rejected the chance of a settlement and resolve. They remain confident that their cabin crew would accept their latest offer if Unite would put it out on the table for them.
So far, the impact that this strike will have around the world has yet to be seen. Worker unions in Australia, Germany and the United States have all stated their intention to support Unite. The cabin crew at Air France is planning a solidarity strike later on this month as well.
However, not all British Airways staff agree with the strike action. In fact, some say that they do not agree with the way that the Unite union has been pushing its members towards a strike. A lot of members who voted against the strike admit that they knew a strike action was going to happen due to the fact that the Unite union was pushing for it so hard.
Despite the strike, British Airways has pledged to fly approximately two thirds of its planned denatures. As many as 60 international airlines have stepped up to offer support to British Airways. Hundreds of replacement cabin crew have also been drawn from the ranks of the British Airways staff to offer support.
