Hertz Becomes Part of Car Sharing Business
by Ted Harris August 17th, 2008
As one the more widely known names in the industry of car hire, Hertz has announced their decision to enter into the increasingly profitable and popular market of car sharing with all of their strength. Car Sharing is represented the best by companies such as Zipcar and allows environmentally conscious or budget minded urbanites to relinquish owning many personal cars or just dispose of their cars altogether in favor of renting vehicles by the hour when they need to run errands, such as weekly or monthly shopping at the supermarket, and going to special events. The car sharing business allows members who are registered to reserve the hourly hire online and simply pick up their car, which can be found at specific parking lots, street corners, or other public areas.
Hertz certainly isn’t a stranger to providing hourly hires. The car hire company has been testing their fortunes in the field for a while now, and they have reported their efforts. However, the difference is that Hertz plans to launch a major campaign this time and potentially a subsidiary brand to compete with pioneers, like Zipcar, more directly. Rich Broome, the Senior Vice President of Hertz, told journalists that within the introductory period, they will concentrate on offering vehicle sharing services in only a handful of the major cities in the United States. Hertz will likely expand that part of the business in the future in order to include more urban centers, such as Boston, that are intermediate sized.
