British Airways Employee Held By Police on Suspicion of Funding Terrorism
by Ted Harris March 4th, 2010
Reports are coming in saying that a 30-year-old British Airways employee is now being held by police on the suspicion that he was funding terrorism. The airline has gone on to confirm that the unnamed employee was arrested at its Newcastle office over the weekend. However, the airline has declined to elaborate on the event any further.
Police have gone on to explain that the man was arrested by North East Counter Terrorism unit. This is a unit that is made up of detectives from London that specialize in anti-terrorism. Due to his charges, the man is presently being held at a high security London police station. The police currently have been granted extra time to question him. It is believed that the man was believed to have dealt with bookings and would therefore not have been subject to security checks.
Britain’s counter terror unit has maintained vigilance against further attacks since the failed December 25th, 2009 bombing. This event saw a man get onto a plane with a bomb that failed to blow up. The plane was bound for the United States. Former London student Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is currently being held over the failed attempt.
Right now the whole world is on high alert due to the last airline bomb scare. However, some countries like the UK have truly stepped up their security at airports to make sure an event like that does not happen again. Flights from the UK to the United States are subject to special screenings. Other countries around the world are doing the same thing to insure that terrorists are not allowed to board planes in their country.
