Brits to holiday abroad this summer
by Fiona Scott January 12th, 2010
Following the staycation of 2009, British holidaymakers are expected to head overseas this summer in search for some guaranteed sunshine.
With what proved to be a shocker of a summer across the UK combined with what has proved to be an icy cold winter, it is most likely to spark a wave of bookings for holidays abroad.
Countries which will prove popular this summer include traditional destinations such as Spain, the USA and France, as well as Turkey, which is set to be a bestseller considering the currency exchange rate and the wide range of cheap accommodation and packages available.
Long-haul destinations which are also proving to be highly sought after include Thailand, which is attempting to woo back holidaymakers after several years of political turmoil, including a coup in 2006 and violent riots last year. Already, the resort island of Phuket has seen strong bookings for 2010.
However, in spite of the willingness to travel abroad, it is anticipated that many of us will look for cheaper deals to compensate for higher exchange rates on foreign currency.
Package holidays are also likely to be highly popular this summer season as many travellers are still wary of their spending given the economic is still fragile, and all-in offers are a good way to keep an eye on the holiday budget and preventing splurging on food and drinks on arrival
Online travel agencies have reported a surge of enquiries by up to 15 per cent compared with the same time last year.
