Emergency Landing of a Flybe Aircraft
by Ted Harris August 9th, 2008
During mid-flight, a Flybe aircraft had to make an emergency landing on route to Belfast City from Manchester, making landing on the Isle of Man. Reports are showing that this type of emergency is not a first that the airline has made. The aircraft, which was transporting 89 passengers, was landed safely at an airport located on the island as a precaution, following smoke reportedly coming from the cabin, says airline officials. One of the spokeswomen for Flybe said that the crew on the flight reported that they could smell smoke coming from the cockpit. The Embraer 195 aircraft made an emergency landing at the Isle of Man Airport for precautionary measures at 1:17 in the afternoon, the spokeswoman said.
According to the safety records of the airline, this isn’t the first time that a flight has required an emergency landing for a similar reason. Another aircraft very similar to this one was made to make an emergency landing in the Leeds Bradford Airport 3 years ago due to smoke beginning to seep in the cabin area. During the time of that incident, which was in August of 2005, the flight from Birmingham to Edinburgh on the Flybe aircraft was told to the BBC to be smoke, most likely, coming from one of the aircraft’s engines, and that landing the plane was only a precautionary measure. None of the passengers or the crew members on either of the flights suffered any injuries during the 2 incidents.
