UK Travel Still at the Mercy of Bad Weather
by Fiona Scott December 24th, 2009
Due to the low temperatures in the UK, which are lower than that of Alaska right now, travel has been thrown into complete chaos. Although most people would not even think of traveling in this weather, many people are still willing to risk their life in an attempt to get to their holiday destination before Christmas.
Just recently at Heathrow, where temperatures dropped below -5.3°C, British Airways had to cancel flights due to fog. EasyJet also was forced to cancel at least 20 flights to and from the South-East, including eight at Gatwick, two at Luton, and another ten at Stansted. However, Easyjet went on to cancel a total of 36 flights yesterday as services to Glasgow, Liverpool and Bristol were later added to their list of cancellations.
Early this week easyJet scrapped 180 flights, because of bad weather. On Monday, another 200 flights were canceled. This left hundreds of passengers waiting for flights overnight at Luton. A message on the easyJet website said that they sincerely apologize for the disruption. However, due to the current weather conditions, they have had to cancel some of their flights.
Overall, there were around 30 cancellations on Southern train services between London and the south coast as well. Also, due to bad weather, eight people have already died. Two people were killed when their coach overturned on an icy road in Cornwall as well.
In the coldest part of the UK, Tullock, Aberdeenshire, the temperatures have dropped to -16°C. Hampshire village of Odiham was able to record the lowest temperature in England of -9.6°C. These low temperatures have caused a lot of travel problems.
