Ryanair Under Attack After Passengers Stranded on Plane with no Refreshments
by Howard Williams December 23rd, 2009
It appears that Ryanair has now come under attack after passengers were stranded on a badly delayed flight and were refused refreshments. This left passengers with nothing to eat or drink but ice cubes.
The Stansted to Dinard flight was left waiting on the tarmac for over four hours reports say. The plane had to wait while the runway was cleared of snow. Passengers complained about the heat on board and asked for refreshments. However, they were told they were not allowed, because the flight had not taken off. Then the passengers asked if they could be let off the plane, and they were told that they had to stay on while the runway was cleared.
The plane was actually still on the ground at 8pm after it had been scheduled to take off at 3:50pm. Despite the rising temperatures in the plane, and the discomfort of many of the 200 people on board, the only water the crew gave out was in the form of ice cubes in plastic cups.
A spokeswoman for the company said that the refreshments bar could not be opened on the ground because of Inland Revenue implications. She said that there has been severe weather conditions across much of Europe, and Ryanair has apologized to passengers. However, they are trying to accommodate as many as possible to minimize inconvenience. Stansted airport has been closed for several hours, and they are hoping to get passengers to their destinations as quickly as possible.
A spokesperson for the airport said that the plane had been held on the tarmac because of deicing and clearing of snow. They said that any decision about passengers once they had been on the plane was the airline’s responsibility.
