Well many experts said it was bound to happen again, and it did. It seems that yet another airline has met its end thanks to the hard economic times. This time, over 4,000 British holidaymakers found themselves left stranded abroad following the collapse of Scotland’s largest holiday charter and budget airline, Flyglobespan.

On top of this, the 117,000 people who booked Christmas breaks with this company will also be missing out on holidays. It will also be a very unhappy Christmas for the 800 staff who are now out of a job.

Reports show that 4,000 holidaymakers are thought to be stranded abroad. 27,000, out of the 117,000 that had booked flights with this company, booked package holidays and should be refunded. The remaining 90,000, who had booked flights only, are expected to lose what they had paid. The people who paid online using debit cards are most likely to lose their money. Only credit card payments or the people who booked using ATOL bound travel agents are likely to see any kind of refund.

Most of this airline’s flights operated from Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen. Many of the areas that this airline served included Mediterranean resorts and a few long haul destinations like Florida and Egypt. The airline did have a few flights from Cardiff, Belfast and Manchester.

Speculation rose just earlier this week that Flyglobespan was about to go into administration. However, the airline denied these reports and said that it was about to secure a major funding package from Halcyon Investments, which is a Jersey-based corporate financing firm. The deal fell through though, and the airline filed for administration earlier this week.
