Gordon Brown Steps In to Resolve British Airways Strike
by Isabel Taylor December 17th, 2009
It now seems that the prime minister, Gordon Brown, has announced that he wants to step in an try to resolve the British Airways strike before it gets underway. This news comes on the heels of the announcement that British Airways was going to the High Courts this week to try and get a last minute injunction.
Gordon Brown said that he just recently spoke with the transport minister, Lord Adonis, and said that the government is going to do everything in its power to try and stop this strike. However, the government could be running out of time since the strike is due to take place on December 22nd.
Gordon Brown admitted that he was worried as to what kind of problems the 12 day strike would cause. Brown said that Lord Adonis and he both agree that the different sides on this dispute have to look outwards and not just inwards. They have to look and see what this strike will do to the passengers and to the future of the company as a whole.
However, a lot of people say that it’s too late for a last minute injunction as well. They go on to point out that even if British Airways wins the injunction, most workers will simply not show up for work. The chief executive of British Airways, Willie Walsh, said that they are absolutely determined to do whatever they can do protect their customers from the unjustified and appealing decision the union has made. He does not want to see Christmas ruined for a million people just because of the bad choice the union made.
