Low cost airline Ryanair has announced that it will create 1,700 new jobs when it opens a brand new base at Oslo’s Rygge airport. The move is predicted to increase traffic for the carrier at the airport to 1.7 million passengers.

Ryanair already operates six routes from the airport and by establishing a base there it will increase its number of routes by sixteen. The airline says that it will base three of its aircraft in Oslo as part of the $200 million operation.

The news that Ryanair will open up a new base in Oslo comes on the back of announcements that it will increase its fleets at both Bristol and Liverpool airports. These moves seem to suggest that the airline has shelved plans to reduce routes as a way of cutting costs. The budget carrier has also said that it will be increasing its number of routes from U.K. airports such as Bristol, Glasgow, Liverpool and Edinburgh at the beginning of next year.

A drop in the price of oil has helped the airline to announce that in the year quarter to September 30th net profits were up by thirty-five percent to $370 million. However revenue was down for the period due to a reduction in the price of tickets. Ryanair has also said that it aims to reduce its airfares over the next six months by twenty percent. The airline admits that this will mean it will be running at a loss for the second half of the year but is confident that it will end the year in profit.
