It now seems that the UK prime minister, David Cameron, has now turned to easyJet’s low frills policies as a way to run the public sector in times of recession. David Cameron now thinks that no frills politics are the best way forward.

easyJet founder Sir Stelios Haji Loannou said that political parties are now proposing different ways of running their local councils. One is being called the easyCouncil, and the other is called John Lewis. He went on to say that he is not going to say that he knows which one is right, but he thinks that the public knows exactly what easyCouncil means. It means a standard level of service at a low price with additional services that cost more. This is much in the same way that easyJet, a low frills airline, works. Everything is just right out there, and there is nothing to hide.

He went on to say that it’s all about the choice as much as it is about price. It’s all about giving power to the people to pay for what they consider of value. Sir Stelios said to take speedy boarding for easyJet as an example. He said that he has flown for 14 years, a couple times every week on easyJet. People who buy speedy boarding get on the plane first. Some find this meaningful and something that they want, and others do not.

This is a model that many are saying could be applied to public services as well. People will have a chance to decide what they need and think is best for them. They will also have the option of not paying for things that they are never going to need or use.
