Skyscanner Able to Beat Recession
by Natalie Cooper November 24th, 2009
It now seems that the Scottish online travel research company, Skyscanner, has been able to report a huge surge in business. The company says that it expects a revenue of £9 million in the year to May compared with just £3.5 million that was seen in the previous 12 months.
Gareth Williams, the chief executive of Skyscanner, says that the company has been benefiting from the downturn, because leisure and business travelers are now becoming more cost conscious. He went on to point out that there is still a huge appetite for travel, but people need to do it more economically.
Williams started Skyscanner with Barry Smith and Bonamy Grimes almost eight years ago, because they felt that there was a market for helping people find the cheapest flights without a lot of unnecessary complications. Although the business was always decent, it has now taken off due to the fact that people want to find the best deals.
Skyscanner, which is based in Edinburgh, employs about 58 people, and 10 of these are based in Poland. As of now, Skyscanner is able to provide online flight comparison prices on more than 670,000 routes for 600 airlines.
Experts say that these are the kinds of sites that are going to be taking off due to the recession. Any sites that compare prices on things like airline prices, hotel prices, and even car hire prices will be able to capitalize in this kind of marketplace. People still have a desire to travel, but have to do it in a way that they can save money. That is what these kinds of sites are set up to offer.
