Located in the southern coastal region of Algarve, Portimao is one of Portugal’s premier tourist destinations. Many thousands of tourists flock to the city to escape the busy rat-race or cold weather of the cities further north. Alvor is located in the western area of Portimao, and sits about five kilometres to the west. With car hire at Portimao/Alvor, getting around is remarkable easy.

Portimao sits only 12kms to the east of Lagos, another large city of the Algarve province. Getting to the city of Portimao can be done by taking the A22 across the coastal hinterland region of Portugal. Also, the N125 connects Portimao and Alvor with other major cities of the Algarve, including Lagos and Faro.

Visitors to the city of Portimao and Alvor will be impressed with the wide range of hotels available. A significant number of accommodation options are located close to car rental at Portimao/Alvor, making travel extremely easy. Many of the hotels are near or on beach front property, and generally remain quite expensive throughout the year.

Visitors can drive into the city, but most people tend to catch a train to the station located in the centre of town, or fly into the small air facility that serves Portimao. From here, tourists can find cheap car hire at Portimao/Alvor to get around the city. There are about three wonderful golf courses on offer for visitors.

Apart from golf courses, the city of Portimao contains a variety of interesting sites to experience. Some of these include the Riverbank Zone and its fascinating café culture, Alvor Castle and Divino Salvador de Alvor Church. The beaches and resorts in the city also attract a large of tourists.
